Trump-Xi Phone Call Discusses Trade and Taiwan as U.S. Considers Nvidia Chip Sales to China
President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call Monday morning, covering topics from trade to Taiwan. The discussion comes as the U.S. weighs permitting Nvidia (NVDA) to export its advanced H200 AI chips to China. Earlier this month, the two leaders met in Busan, South Korea, agreeing to a trade deal that would reduce U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from 57% to 47%. In return, China pledged to boost purchases of U.S. soybeans, limit rare earth export restrictions, and curb fentanyl trafficking into the U.S.
Xi emphasized Taiwan's reunification with China as a cornerstone of the post-war international order, urging renewed U.S.-China cooperation reminiscent of their WWII alliance. Both nations have begun implementing the Busan agreement, with bilateral relations showing signs of stabilization.
